News and Events in the Pisgah National Forest - Updated April 5, 2012.

Pisgah Forest News:

4/9/2012 - You know Spring is in the airwhen the horse team arrives to plow the garden plat at the Cradle of Forestry! Set aside Saturday April 14th for your first visit to the Cradle this season. It's opening day, and weather permitting, you can enjoy watching or maybe even try your hand at plowing the garden plot with a wonderful team of horses. Local crafters will be there to explain how things were done in days gone by, and we understand that there will also be fiddle music in the afternoon. Cradle of Forestry Web Site Link

4/5/2012 - Spring is in full swing, and many Pisgah Forest recreation spots opened on April 1st. The Forest Service announced these openings:

Pisgah National Forest campgrounds:
Curtis Creek
Lake Powhatan
Sunburst
North Mills River
Davideon River does not close.

Pisgah National Forest day use areas:
Lake Powhatan
North Mills River
Old Fort
Table Rock

3/29/2012 - It's Ramp season! Ramp hunters are about to begin searching the woods for these pungent (some say stinky) wild leeks can be harvested in the Pisgah Forest in some areas (not allowed in wilderness areas). You may harvest up to 5 pounds of ramps for personal use. A free permit is available for personal use harvesting. For commercial harvesting information contact the Ranger Station for permit and fee information. A brochure about ramps is located here.

3/28/2012 - We have heard that the prescribed burn of the area bear Bearpen Mountain was started today.

3/16/2012 - Added a page called Pisgah Forest Tidbits - for lack of a better name - which talks about various topics about the forest. Check it out for some interesting 'inside information' about the Pisgah National Forest.

3/16/2012 - A friend that volunteers that the Pisgah District Ranger Station informed us that there is a major trail improvement going on at the Pink Beds Trail Loop. As you may know, the Beavers have been in control of the water level on the trail for years. As we likes to say - it was Beavers 4 - Forest Service 0. Well, they have been working on a great walkway over the flooded boggy area, and it sounds like it will be very nice.

Site News:

Update 11/8/2011 - We added directions to Cove Creek Falls. We also added an email sign up form that displayes when clicking on an ad for a Pisgah Trail Map.

Update: 9/22/2011 - We added a page where you can downoad a map showing the free roadside campsites in the Pisgah Ranger District.

Update: 9/11/2011 - We added this page to the site to inform viewers about things going on in the forest and area.

Update: 9/2/2011 - We want to let you know what's next for this site. We will continue to work on the site as time permits. We need to add a section on fishing in the Pisgah National Forest, as well as the Forest Discovery Center. Our wildflower section will be expanded greatly. We will add a lot more hikes, and hopefully provide some downloadable trail maps for some of the hikes. Sign up for our free newsletter to see what's new!

Schedule of Activities and Community Events:

It's quiet in the forest right now - the fall events are completed, and it's time to enjoy the beauty of the forest and mountains in autumn.
