Sliding Rock - Pisgah Forest North Carolina

One of the most frequent set of questions we get involve Sliding Rock - a natural water slide where the flow of LookingGlass Creek flows over a granite dome creating a natural water slide which ends in a deep pool. On busy hot summer days there are hundreds of people waiting to take the plunge into the cold pool.

Directions to get to Sliding Rock.

Before we look at the rules for Sliding Rock let's talk about the location of the recreational area. Many people call to get the 'address' for Sliding Rock for their GPS units. Well, there is no address - it is a place in the forest that does not have a postal address assigned to it.

Sliding Rock is located on highway 276 between Waynesville and Brevard - it is about 8 miles South of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and about 7 1/2 miles from the entrance to the forest near Brevard. You can us a business address to locate the entrance to the forest near Brevard - use the Pizza Hut at 7 Pisgah Highway, Pisgah Forest, NC, 28768.

If you can enter coordinates directly into your GPS you can use these to get to Sliding Rock.

You can enter these coordinates into Google Maps and it will show you the road as well as photos and even a 'street view' of the highway at the entrance to Sliding Rock Recreation Area. (See map below).

Rules for Sliding Rock Recreation Area.

Sliding Rock is hugely popular, and very busy during the summer. Being familiar with the rules of operation will help avoid disappointment on your visit. Read the rules below and you will know what to expect on your visit.

1. All sliders should know how to swim - the pool at the bottom of the slide is deep. Children under 7 years old must slide with an adult. Only Coast Guard approved flotation devices are allowed. You must slide in a seated position. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult in the recreation area.

2. The Sliding Rock Recreational area does not support picnics, and glass containers and alcoholic beverages are prohibited there. Pets must be on a leash in the recreation area, and they may not enter the water. Fishing is not allowed in the pool or on sliding rock. There are no hiking trails that leave from the Sliding Rock Recreation area.

3. There is parking for about 100 cars and 4 buses. Groups are limited in size to 50, and group leaders must contact personnel at the fee gate prior to unloading and they must supervise their group at all times. Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis. When the lot is full, several cars are allowed into the area to move into parking spots that become available. When there are more cars than can wait practically in the lot, the recreation area personnel will close the lot to additional traffic. Only 4 buses are allowed as there is limited bus parking. Groups are encouraged to arrive before 11:00 AM or after 4:00 PM.

4. The fee to enter the Sliding Rock Recreation Area is one dollar per person over 6 years old. Inter-agency passes allow the passholder a fifty cent discount to the site. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day there are lifeguards generally on duty between the hours of 10:30 AM and 6:00 PM. During these hours the rest rooms and changing rooms are also open. The lifeguards will close the sliding rock to use in the event of unsafe weather or water conditions. Report serious injuries to a lifeguard.
